2019 Goals: Do Overs, Reflection, & Action!
I am a firm believer that one should never make a new year’s resolution until February.
December is too full of stress and unrealistic expectations and pressure to perform and conform. Holiday parties, kid’s events, professional dos, not to mention family gatherings (often with people you don’t particularly like), decorating the house, finding the perfect presents, and the unpredictable, but typically crappy weather…they all conspire to make December the worst time for reflection and self actualization. In January, everyone is sick and the weather is even worse.
But February! February is a great time for reflection. Thinking about the last year, without still being mired in it, can give you a better bird’s eye view. What about last year brought you joy? What did you achieve? What would you like to avoid in the coming year? And what about your hopes and dreams? What are you going to do this year to achieve them…..even if you didn’t do anything last year to achieve them.
For me, 2018 was bitter sweet. I lost my Grandma. I had extensive spinal surgery and am still dealing with health problems and more surgery to come. All three of my kids are in college, so I will soon be an empty nester after 25 years. In my professional life, I started working with some extraordinary survivors of mass casualty events who are being further victimized by online hate and harassment. While I love helping people to regain control over their lives, it can take an emotional toll.
So, over the course of the next few days and weeks, I am going to make action plans for the coming year and I am going to share them here and on my Instagram. I hope that you will really take the time to think about 2019 and what you want from your life, then make a plan to go out and get it!
